Located in downtown Petaluma, Skippy’s caters to those looking for farm-fresh eggs by the dozen or by the case! And when we say “farm-fresh,” we mean often laid the same day or the day before on our farm that is located just a few miles away.

Originally located on our farm, Skippy’s was started as a farm store during the 1970s by the previous owners of our farm. Over the years, we moved the store into town to make our eggs more accessible and we’ve expanded our selection to include restaurant supply and many other great local, specialty, and natural food items.

On top of all that, we have great service!

My mom, Judy Mahrt, has been around chickens her entire life, so it was only natural for her to become interested in our heritage. She’s been collecting poultry antiques and memorabilia for more than 30 years! Now we’re finally putting it all together in a collection showcasing both our family’s heritage and the history of chicken farming in Sonoma County. Our little museum is located right inside Skippy’s, and we can’t wait to show you what we’ve put together as soon as we finish the final touches.

Most of us take for granted that there will always be an abundance of food on grocery store shelves, but how often do we take the time to think about how far the food traveled to get there?

The reality is that much of our food travels thousands of miles before it reaches store shelves, which means many of the brands you know and love may have a much bigger carbon footprint than you realize. That’s why we believe it’s so important to buy food produced by local farmers. When you buy from local farms like ours, instead of traveling 1,000s of miles, your food only takes 10s of miles to get to your local grocery store. In fact, 90% of the stores we serve are located within 100 miles of our farm!

Just like most other foods, despite being so fragile, it’s common for eggs to go on quite a road trip before reaching their final destination. Many egg brands you see on the grocery store shelf, including locally owned brands, don’t own chickens and contract with out-of-state farmers to pack eggs for them. One other local farmer we know calls these ‘diesel eggs’.

So how do you know where your eggs came from? The easiest way to tell if the eggs came from out of state is to look up their USDA plant code which will be a 4 digit code printed on the side or back of the egg carton. We’re too small to have a USDA plant code, but we do have a California Shell Egg Handler code.

That’s the big difference between us and almost every other egg on the store shelf. We are single-sourced. That means all of the eggs in our brands came from our farm. When you buy our eggs you can feel good knowing they were sustainably raised by your neighbor down the road in Petaluma.

Recently, on a Friday, we found out that the delivery truck carrying our newly hatched chicks was going to arrive at 9 pm instead of 9 am because of weather delays. It wasn’t exactly what we had planned to do with our Friday night but after work, we all went home, ate dinner with our families, and then hopped back in our trucks to head back to the farm to help unload the chicks that night.

Luckily, the hen houses were all prepared with food, water, and heaters so they were nice and warm after the chicks’ long journey to our farm. After about two hours, all the chicks were tucked in for the night and we headed home.

These chicks will be fully grown and laying eggs in only 5 months!
